Pediatric Dentistry Q&A

What is pediatric dentistry?

Due to their growing bodies, children and teenagers have slightly different medical needs than adults. In dentistry, this is true as well. As the mouth develops from childbirth to full maturity, there’s a range of dental needs and developmental milestones that require special attention.

Pediatric dentistry deals with these unique needs. At SPA Dental Group, the team of highly trained and skilled dentists works with both your child and you to ensure that everyone is on board with the plan of care, helping to create healthy, beautiful smiles and happy outcomes.

When should my child go to the dentist?

According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry,  children should have their first dental appointment within six months after their first tooth erupts or by age 1.

This crucial first visit is designed to accomplish three things: familiarizing your child with the office environment in a non-threatening way, introducing child-friendly dental terminologies such as “Mister Thirsty,” “Sleepy Juice,” and “Tooth Pillow,” and providing an opportunity to check for milk bottle tooth decay.

In addition, your child’s first dental appointment is a wonderful opportunity for you to learn about what to expect down the road and the steps you can take now to help them have a healthy and happy smile.

What should I expect at my child’s appointment?

The team at SPA Dental Group is highly skilled in pediatric dentistry. Dr. Pahwa completed special training in pediatric dentistry, including a one-year clerkship at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry in Baltimore, Maryland, as well as having served a high needs-population pediatric dental office in Oxon Hill, Maryland.

While each appointment is slightly different depending on the reason for the visit, Dr. Pahwa’s experience and caring bedside manner help her put pediatric patients at ease right from the beginning, ensuring positive outcomes for the patient and parents alike. The team at SPA Dental Group is happy to answer any questions you may have regarding your child’s oral health.
