Dental Implants Q&A
What are dental implants?
When you’ve lost a tooth, dental implants offer permanent tooth replacement that looks and acts just like natural teeth. The implants are usually made of a titanium screw and are anchored directly into your bone tissue in the same location as the roots of your missing tooth. The top half of the implant is usually a porcelain crown and will function just like any other teeth you have.
Dental implants stimulate your bone tissue and are virtually indistinguishable from your surrounding teeth. Once in place, they require no special care and will last a lifetime. Along with regular dental visits, good oral hygiene will aid in the life of your new implants.
Why replace missing teeth?
When you lose a tooth, the problem is more than just cosmetic. Your teeth are anchored directly into your jawbone, and every time you bite down, you stimulate that bone tissue, which keeps it healthy and strong.
When you lose a tooth, a portion of your jawbone is no longer stimulated, and that tissue can begin to deteriorate, leading to a shrunken area in the lower portion of your face. Additional issues created by a missing tooth include:
- Shifting of adjacent teeth
- Development of temporomandibular joint syndrome
- Difficulty maintaining proper oral hygiene, leading to decay or gum disease
- Inability to eat certain foods
If you need to replace any missing teeth, the team at SPA Dental Group can assess the health of your jaw bone and whether dental implants are right for you.
Are dental implants right for me?
Most men and women are great candidates for dental implants, but you may need to address specific dental issues before getting your new dental implant.
If you’re replacing a severely damaged or decayed tooth, your dentist must remove the tooth before beginning the process. If your surrounding teeth or gums also need repair, it may be best to complete that work before getting your new implant.
What is the process for getting dental implants?
Getting implants takes several appointments, but you’ll walk out with a new smile on the same day the implant is positioned. The process begins with a thorough dental exam and the removal of decayed tooth or gum tissue if needed.
Next, your dentist prepares your gum and bone tissue to receive the implant, which is made of bioidentical titanium. Your dentist uses a tiny pilot hole to direct the implant, and caps the post with a temporary false tooth while your permanent crown is crafted at the lab.
It will take a few months for your bone tissue to fuse around the new implant. Once that process is complete, you’ll return to SPA Dental Group to replace the temporary crown with the permanent version.
When you’re ready to get started, schedule a time to come in and meet with SPA Dental Group to create your customized treatment plan.
