Dentures Q&A

What are dentures?

Dentures are a removable tooth replacement option. With today’s technology, the team at SPA Dental Group can create a set of dentures that gives you a beautiful smile.

There are two main types of dentures: full and partial. A full denture replaces all of your teeth. You wear a full denture as one solid upper piece and one solid lower piece. Partial dentures replace just a few missing teeth and are created to match your surrounding natural teeth.

What are the advantages of dentures?

You might choose dentures for numerous reasons. Dentures are more affordable than permanent options like dental implants. They also offer the following benefits:

  • Ability to eat a varied diet
  • A more appealing smile
  • Restored speech
  • Improved facial contouring
  • Stops teeth from shifting out of alignment (partial dentures)

During your appointment, your dentist at SPA Dental Group gets to know you and your specific needs, and they help you decide which tooth replacement option is right for you.

Do dentures fit perfectly from the very beginning?

When you first receive your new set of dentures, there will be an adjustment period while your gum tissue gets used to the dentures. You might notice an increase in saliva production as well as some soreness, especially when biting down. These sensations will subside over the next few weeks.

You might also notice changes in your chewing and speech patterns at first, but your muscles will quickly adjust to your dentures, and you’ll settle into normal eating and speaking patterns.

Your dentist checks the fit of your dentures when they arrive and can address any “hot spots,” or sore areas. During your follow-up visit, she can further refine the fit of your dentures, if needed. Don’t be shy about speaking up if your dentures don’t feel right; the team at SPA Dental Group wants you to have the best experience possible and can work to correct many common fit issues.

How long do dentures last?

With proper care, your dentures can last for many years. It’s essential to maintain good oral hygiene to keep your dentures clean and prevent gum disease. Before you leave with your new dentures, your dentist provides thorough care and cleaning instructions.

If your dentures become damaged or begin to show signs of wear, your dentist may be able to repair them. Schedule an appointment with SPA Dental Group as soon as possible so that you can have any issues addressed before they further affect your dentures.
